The faceless, nameless and gender-neutral protagonist in the narrative. Referred to as “FRANCIS” within the script but is never referred to by name throughout the story. They wake up in the BoltHalt facility after an operation of some sort. Lacks any memories and realises they are mute and is suffering from mental damage which has caused their mind to split into two parts, the right and left side of their brain.
Personality traits: confused, lack of any strong personality traits. Lack of any memory and lack of any way of communication.
Physical traits: average human, weak as they’re recovering from experiment/operation.
Motivators: combined motivation from each side of their brain.
Fears: consisting of fears of both sides of the brain.
Role in story: The user of the application will be controlling this character’s decisions throughout the story. A character without any strong personality traits. This allows the user to experience the story through this protagonist view easier. The neutral personality, lack of speech and lack of memories helps the user project themselves into the story as this protagonist which will help the players immersion.
The protagonist’s mind has split into two separate entities, the left and right side of the brain. The left-brain figures this out in a short amount of time. The left brain feels like the superior part of the brain and will try its best to analyse each decision and calculate the best way to survive and fix each situation. Represented by a female voice (neutral accent, articulate) which the user will hear panned to the left of the headphones/speakers while playing the application.
Personality traits: Purely logical. Cold, intelligent, realistic and proficient in language.
Physical traits: none, although represented in one scene as a glowing entity which represents the presence of this character.
Motivators: survival, finding information and fixing any damage done to the physical body and mind of the protagonist which it is part of.
Fears: death and failing to find answers. Failing to improve or fix the damage done to the protagonist so far.
Role in story: Left brain is a character that outlines the logical reasoning behind making certain decisions which the user will face. It is a way of coaxing the user to make a logical decision and will give reasons why that is the best option.
The protagonist’s mind has split into two separate entities, the left and right side of the brain. The right-brain learns about this near the start of the story. The right brain wants to improve the current situation and fears the protagonist is in trouble. Feels sensitive and damaged after whatever happened to damage the protagonist. Tries to make impulsive decisions near the start of the narrative out of fear. Represented by a male voice (neutral accent, emotional and eccentric) which the user will hear panned to the right of the headphones/speakers while playing the application.
Personality traits: Emotional, empathetic, imaginative, creative and impulsive. Very good at spatial awareness and staying positive through upsetting times.
Physical traits: None, although represented in one scene as a glowing entity which represents the presence of this character.
Motivators: Finding safety, self-fulfilment, helping others and gaining a positive sense of “belonging”.
Fears: That things won’t work out, that the protagonist will be wronged or that a situation will become more stress inducing. Also, not making friends.
Role in story: Right brain is a character that outlines the emotional or empathic reasoning behind making decisions which the user will face. It is a way of coaxing the user to decide based on empathy, reflexes or stress and will give reasons why that is the best option.
A male doctor and “AI handler” whose job it is to look after the protagonist after a failed experiment. Is a robot but has been upgraded and disguised to appear as a human. Wants to help the protagonist get better by going through more rounds of drugs to determine if they are able to complete operation but also doesn’t want to alarm the protagonist with the truth as it might be too much of a shock and cause too much stress. Voice represented by a male neutral accented deep voice. Later in narrative voice becomes more robotic after taking some damage.
Personality traits: Intelligent, secretive and lacking in social skills. Perfectionist and will become panicked if things don’t go according to plan.
Physical traits: Robotic but disguised as a human. Average height and build. Incredibly strong and moves rigidly.
Motivators: Looking after the protagonist as well as the facility. Furthering research and breakthroughs in science and bioengineering.
Fears: Failing to deliver successful experiments. Failing to help facility progress technologically.
Role in story: At first, little is known about the character. this ensures the user shares the confusion which the protagonist’s left and right brain have, especially when a major decision is based upon waiting for or escaping the doctor’s presence. The doctor is a character which outlines to the protagonist and user what the facility story is about (depending on choices made) and tests the users trust a certain point.
A medical robot. Originally intended to help diagnose and treat any humans afflicted with injuries. Started to develop a personality which caused malfunctions in its source code. This caused Med Bot to see humans which had undergone experiments to become Robots as “being harmed” and would try to interfere with experiments. Would also try to fix and cure robots, as well as humans. Once the malfunction was apparent to Bolt Halt they imprisoned Med Bot in the lighthouse situated outside of the facility for the safety of other humans and robots. Has fixed other robots banished to the lighthouse and plans to escape. Med Bot has developed to see the bolthalt facility as the largest disease which causes harm to humans.
Personality traits: Programmed to display empathy to any humans and has gained empathy towards any robots also.
Physical traits: A robot so strong, but very slow and lacks any agility. Has various compartments attached to body originally used for first aid supplies but have been repurposed for other equipment.
Motivators: Eliminating Bolthalt facility. Helping cure any humans or robots.
Fears: No strong fears.
Role in story: Showcase larger narrative and help establish the world within the story. A character which puts the protagonist in situations which leads to difficult decisions.
A robot designed for construction and expansion purposes. Originally one of the first robots made by bolthalt inc, helped with planning the best way to expand and build up the facility. Eventually became obsolete by newer models of construction robots. Most of its crucial parts were taken and repurposed for other robots. Was dumped into the light house as waste before being re-built and fixed by Med Bot several years later.
Physical traits: A very strong female robot. Has an active sonar radar which helps it navigate tunnels.
Motivators: Following orders.
Role in story: Showcase larger narrative and help establish the world within the story.
Com Bot 4
A robot designed for military and security purposes. Was given role of facility security and would see any unrecognised trespassers as a treat that would have to be subdued or neutralised. Would always follow orders of owner. Became damaged when a break in occurred at the facility. Was discarded and labeled as broken by bolthalt. Put into lighthouse as waste but was fixed by Med Bot. When fixed, was programmed to see Med Bot as new owner and the entire BoltHalt facility as trespassing on the land it sits on.
Personality traits: Lacks any emotion. Appears independent but actually follows any orders from or programmed by med bot.
Physical traits: A robot, so very strong but lacks any flexibility or much dexterity.
Motivators: Taking revenge on bolthalt facility via destructive means.
Role in story: Showcase larger narrative and help establish the world within the story. Outlines that Bolthalt facility has some enemies which hints to a negative past history. A character which puts pressure on the protagonist to make a decision.
